When someone lands on your YouTube channel, one of the first things they see is your cover art. This is your chance to give a good first impression, give people a reason to subscribe, and get them to watch your content. Today, I’m going to show you how you can make yours in 5 steps using a free tool called Canva.
Step #1) Get inspired. Before you design your cover art, take some time to surf through YouTube for inspiration. Look at other people’s cover art and take note of what you like. Look for examples in your industry but also outside your industry. If your channel is about make-up, don’t neglect cooking channels. Sometimes you’ll find new design ideas you never thought of before.
Make note of elements that catch your eye and inspire you, like styles, colors, layouts, and graphics. Also, make note of the information you want to include in your cover art. Keep in mind that less is more.
Pro Tip: Use your cover art to share important information.
Here are some ideas:
- Your upload schedule
- Instagram handle
- What your channel is about
- Your tagline
Step #2) Download the cover art template. YouTube has image size requirements. They are as follows:
There are a couple of things to keep in mind before you begin designing your channel art.
#1) Your design must meet the minimum requirement of 2560×1440 (TV dimensions).
#2) However, logos and text must stay within the safe area, 1546×423 (mobile dimensions). If you add text outside the safe area, it may end up being cut off or distorted on some devices. To avoid this download the channel art template. Click here to download .
Step #3) Upload the template to Canva. Log in to your Canva account. On the Canva home screen, scroll down to the “Social Media & Email Headers.” Section. Select the “Youtube Channel Art” design.
On the left sidebar, click “Upload.” Upload the template as a .png file.
Step #4) Design your cover art. Once the template is done downloading to Canva, select it and stretch it to fit the entire white space. This is what it will look like.
Each shade of grey represents dimensions for all the different devices. Remember, as you’re designing your cover art, make sure your main elements, like the logo and text, stay within that safe area. (screenshot)
When you’re done designing your cover art, name your file and download it.
Step #5) Upload your new cover art. Go to your YouTube channel, click the blue “customize channel” button, click the pencil icon, then edit channel art. Upload your new cover art. You’re all set.
